# Requests from authorities

How Seleya Labs answers requests from courts, police and other authorities for data held by Seleya Address.

Seleya Address holds other people's mail, so we treat every request for it with care. This is how we answer requests from courts, police, regulators and other authorities.

## What we need

- A request in writing, from an authority entitled to make it, under a law that applies to us and to the data.
- A request as narrow as its purpose: the address, the data and the period it needs.
- Requests go to support@seleya.ai, marked "Request from an authority", or by post to Seleya Labs Inc., 1111B S Governors Ave STE 56751, Dover, DE 19904, USA.

## How we answer

- We check that each request is valid, and we push back on requests that are unclear, too broad or made under the wrong law.
- We give only what the request lawfully requires, and nothing in bulk.
- For a company's addresses, the company controls the mail. We send the authority to the company first unless the law or the urgency of the case makes that impossible.
- We tell the owner of the address before we hand anything over, unless the law forbids it or telling them would put someone in danger. If we can't tell them at first, we do so once we may.
- We have no way into the service for any authority other than answering requests like these, and we build none.

## Emergencies

If someone's life or safety is in immediate danger, we may give limited data on a request that explains the danger, and we ask for the formal request afterwards.

## Where the data is

Mail and the database are in the EU, in AWS's Frankfurt region. Seleya Labs is a US company and its team works in South Africa. We answer each request under the law that actually applies to it, and we don't treat a request from one country as valid for data that another country's law protects without checking.

## Openness

Each year we publish how many requests we received and how we answered them.
